Francesco Bandarin, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Center until recently, said in an interview with The Asahi Shimbun Sunday edition in December 2008, "While it is important for both (the concept of the world heritage and politics) to be consistent with each other, what should come forward is the preservation of the world heritages. There will be no sightseeing if we fail to preserve them. People engaged in politics should bear that in mind." The center assists the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and coordinates all matters related to world heritage.

　ユネスコ世界遺産センターのフランチェスコ・バンダリン前所長は０８年１２月の朝日新聞日曜版のインタビューで、「(世界遺産の理念と政治)両方が一致することは重要だが、前面に出すべきものは世界遺産の保全です。もしも遺産が保全されなかったら観光もなくなる。政治をやっている人たちが遺跡の保全ということを念頭におかなければならない」と語っている。

 As Bandarin says, preservation must be the first thing to be done about the world heritages. Stricter regulations on tourism will have to be the top priority especially when a site is inscribed on the natural heritage list. A well-planned preservation scheme must be put into practice if a registered heritage can continue to help revitalize the regional economy where it is located.

　バンダリン氏の発言の通り、まず世界遺産は保全されるべきものでなければならない。特に自然遺産は登録に際して観光客の規制強化などをより徹底しなければならないし、地域経済の活性化のためにもきちんとした保全計画が重要となるだろう。

 Too much weight on Western Europe at the World Heritage Committee and the regional bias in heritage inscription has been criticized for years. Just as the committee tries to improve the situation, what is most important will be a fuller management of heritage preservation after the registration. That will be the only way to enhance the raison d'etre of world heritage as a universal value to mankind.

　西欧偏重の委員会の見直しがされ、世界的な地域による偏りの是正を目指している今こそ、登録後に人類の普遍的な遺産として保全するためのマネジメントを徹底することが世界遺産の存在意義として最も大切なことではないだろうか。
