The Secret of MLB's Business Growth

6/3/2013

In March, the U.S. economic magazine "Forbes" released its ranking of the world’s top 20 pro sport teams for 2013 in terms of assessed asset value. By category, soccer monopolized top three slots and had five teams on the list. This is not surprising given that it has the biggest population of active players across the world. The U.S. National Football League (NFL), reputed for the crushing performance and high viewership of the annual Super Bowl, had the biggest number of 12 teams listed. The U.S Major League Baseball (MLB) was rather lackluster as compared with those two sports. The list contained only three teams. Remarkably, however, all the 30 MLB teams saw their combined asset value surge a resounding 23% over the previous year.

MLB is indisputably big in economic scale. The Seattle Mariners paid Ichiro Suzuki $18 million in annual salary in his heyday. The Boston Red Sox signed a six-year, $52 million contract with Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2006 when he pursued a career in MLB via the posting system. Today MLB earns over four times more than the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in annual gross income. Believe it or not, however, NPB stood almost on a par with MLB in annual income 20 years ago. What has made them so different now?

MLB has two profit sources -- "team business" and "league business". The former is the business done by individual teams at their own discretion. It includes ticket revenues, sponsorship contract fees, merchandize sales revenues, broadcasting rights fees, etc. In fact, MLB and NPB teams are about square in the team business.

The big difference comes from the league business, which is undertaken literally by a league as a whole. This encompasses advertising revenues from league sponsors, nationwide and overseas broadcasting rights fees, online ticket sales revenues, etc. MLB has made a big success in the league business in the past two decades. It annually distributes millions of dollars to each team out of its league business profit. This helps teams and the league thrive hand in hand.

So, NPB may well imitate MLB’s business style. But things are not that simple. NPB can hardly behave the same way as MLB primarily because of its structural restraints. One of NPB’s major bottlenecks is said to be the capital composition of companies that own the teams. For example, the Yomiuri Giants and the Chunichi Dragons are fully owned by the Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings and the Chunichi Shimbun Group, respectively, while the Yakult Swallows is 20% owned by the Fujisankei Communications Group. This makes it harder for NPB to negotiate contracts for broadcasting rights on behalf of all its 12 teams because higher rights fees could stifle some of their parent companies. Moreover, since each team plays the role of an ad pillar for its parent company, it is difficult for the NPB commissioner to take the lead in developing league business.

In MLB, first Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis defined himself as the final decision maker in matters of league management. Allan Huber "Bud" Selig, the eighth and incumbent commissioner, aligned all team owners to move in step and established the present business model by making the maximum use of that authority.

In the present situation where NPB finds itself, it looks that some teams get preference over the entire league in pursuit of profit. Probably, this may not be the problem peculiar to NPB. But it will be definitely important for NPB to have a long-sighted vision and pursue league profit rather than allowing some individual teams to bend themselves to retain their immediate profit.
