Studying abroad helps you grow

Studying abroad gives you chances to communicate with students from various parts of the world, paving the way for you to mature as a person. Hakumon Herald interviewed Ms. Humiko Hashimoto, who spent a year in Australia for Asian studies and worked at a local NGO as an intern. While in Australia, she organized a photo exhibition featuring the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, which proved to be a big success. She talked about the charms of studying abroad.

For my dream to work abroad

-In the first place, what motivated you to study abroad?

Hashimoto: I had a dream to work abroad, particularly in developing countries. I thought living abroad for a prolonged period will be definitely important for my purpose. Apart from that, I was not quite confident about my English ability at the time. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to come closer to my dream unless I made some improvement before entering the world of work. So, another reason for my decision was to get in contact with various people in English and become more confident about my English ability.

-If you only want to learn English, you can do that by attending a short foreign-language course abroad, can’t you?

Hashimoto: Well, I don’t think that will be adequate if you really want to be confident about your English ability. There is a basic difference in target setting between a short-term language course and a long-term study abroad. The general purpose of a short-term course will be for you to get accustomed to English and speak it better. But in the latter case, you will not only try to get accustomed to English but also aim to attain some other higher purposes, such as studying something in English, speaking out your opinions in English and promoting mutual understanding in English. In fact, you won’t be recognized in the global community if you only speak out your opinions. I think you need to have a real English ability to convince other people. That’s why I have chosen a long-term study abroad.

-So, your purpose was to acquire more practical English skills, was it?

Hashimoto: Yes, that’s right. By the way, I took part in the International Business Professions (IBP) program run by the International Cross-Cultural Committee (ICC) for my study abroad. It is a really good program that enables you to learn English really needed in the business world as it consists of both studying at a local university and working at a local business as an intern. I think staying in an unfamiliar country for a year will give you a good chance to make a great deal of personal progress. In that sense, I recommend you to choose a long-term study abroad rather than a short one.

-Why did you choose Australia?

Hashimoto: Australia is deeply related with both Asia and the Western community. I was looking for a university where I could major in Asian studies. And that happened to be Griffith University in Brisbane. Furthermore, Australia positively accepts many immigrants. It’s a unique country where a wide variety of races and cultures mingle. Griffith University is precisely a miniature Australia. Accepting students from various countries, it takes pride in its cosmopolitan school ethos. l thought I could come into contact with many international students there and exchange opinions with them. That’s why I picked Griffith University.

-Can you tell us about what you experienced and learned at Griffith University?

Hashimoto: Honestly speaking, I had painted a rosy picture of my life in Australia before I left Japan. I had imagined my life there would be a pleasant and fulfilling one. In fact, I could soon get acquainted with my roommates and have many friends thanks to my sociable character. I could spend exciting and enjoyable days during my first month. However, as soon as my classes started, I ran into a lot of difficulties.

Gap between ideal and reality

-What were the major difficulties for you?

Hashimoto: As you many know, lectures in foreign universities proceed on the premise that students prepare for a class and give their opinion during the class. But, due to my inability at English and lack of confidence, I couldn’t accurately communicate my opinions. I was also frustrated during my communication with friends because I couldn’t express myself and couldn’t understand them. In an extreme case, I couldn’t tell jokes nor understand my friends’ jokes. I laughed only after my friends laughed. You would rarely have such a miserable feeling. I also had hard times particularly at small classes where I was the only Japanese. I had to give accurate information about Japan because what I said will form the basis of an image my classmates will have about Japan. But my poor English failed me. I was disappointed in myself when I realized that I knew less about Japan than I had thought.

-How did you get over those hardships?

Hashimoto: I cannot answer the question in simple words. I would say my hard efforts and firm belief played an important role. I had a clear sense of purpose about my plan and I always thought I must change my present situation on my own. So I worked hard to get familiar with English. Specifically, I tried to speak out at least once in each class. Griffith University has relatively many foreign students and people there were tolerant to my poor English. Both students and professors attentively listened to others and evaluated them in the proper way. I think that helped me hang in there.

Getting in touch with diversity

-How did you find your internship?

Hashimoto: I worked an internship for three months with an NGO aimed to preserve the culture of a minority community in Australia. People of various different races worked there. It was certainly the best place for me to experience diversity. Here again, I had difficulties due to my English inability. I felt disoriented at an unfamiliar place in the first few days. But I didn’t want to mess up my precious chance to experience working overseas, so I encouraged myself to communicate with my boss. He gave me a responsible assignment. I had good experiences there.

-What else did you learn from your life in Australia?

Hashimoto: I have become increasingly aware of diversity since I lived in Australia. I met a number of people from various countries during my study and internship. All of them had their own background. Needless to say, they thought and behaved in totally different ways. That is something you can’t experience in Japan. But that’s a global standard. I was quite happy I could experience that and get accustomed to it.

Photo exhibition

-We hear that you organized a photo exhibition featuring the Great East Japan Earthquake during your stay in Australia.

Hashimoto: I thought I should do something soon after the disaster. As I took part in reconstruction of the afflicted areas as a volunteer, I was always concerned about people there. I happened to leave for Australia on March 11, 2012, exactly one year after the quake, and I observed a silent prayer just before my departure. The coincidence stayed in my mind while I was in Australia. I thought of holding an event in memory of the disaster victims. I was trying to develop an idea when I remembered “Michinoku Photo Caravan”, a photo exhibition of the disaster-hit areas held periodically at Japanese universities. So, I decided to do something similar in Australia. Fortunately I knew I could use an exhibition hall for free for one week. I carried it out at once.

-What reaction did you get from your audience?

Hashimoto: Although it was a short exhibition, many people came to see it, both locals and Japanese who lived in Australia. They all looked satisfied. Many Australians said they wished the reconstruction would come to an end as early as possible. We handed a questionnaire to each visitor. A Japanese who lived in Australia for years responded, “This exhibition has made me deeply aware of the quake disaster.” Another said, “I’ll try to prevent my memory of the tragedy from fading away. As I live away from Japan, I cannot directly contribute to the reconstruction. So I’ll keep it in mind. That’s what I can do for the victims.”

-Lastly, what is the charm of studying abroad for you?

Hashimoto: A long stay abroad will surely help you grow a great deal. You will not only learn English but cultivate an ability to accept diversity, which is necessary for you to live in the global community, and recognize your identity as a Japanese. In that sense, IBP I mentioned earlier is wonderful in various ways because it allows you to feel a sense of foreign business in your bones as well as an academic atmosphere in a foreign country. As a matter of fact, INPEX Corp. where I work now is full of diversity and internationality. I think I’m making full use of what I’ve learned from my stay in Australia. In other words, the fascination of studying abroad is that it gives you chances to polish the basic skills needed in the global community and practice procedures to stand on your own feet in the future.

-Thank you for your suggestive talk.
