Money gone, friends gone

 

金の切れ目が縁の切れ目

 

-Do you have any other personal beliefs?

 

―そのほかに野中さんが個人的に意識している信念などはありますか。

 

Nonaka: Besides the 5 S’s, I try to be careful not to trouble other people. I also take a good care of money. I pay my particular attention to those two things. We shouldn’t bother other people for selfish reasons like tardiness, absence or an unreasonable request. On the other hand, you should sometimes rely on others to form good personal relationships. I have been always aware of the spirit of give and take since I was a rank-and-filer and since I became a president. There is an old saying that relationships built on wealth will end when the money ends. That’s well said. I think we must take a good care of money.

 

野中　５Ｓももちろんですが、他人に迷惑をかけないこと、そしてお金の管理。この２つを特に心がけています。遅刻や欠席、理不尽な要求など、自分勝手な理由で人を困らせてはいけません。一方で、いい関係の構築のために時には人に頼ることも必要です。ギブ・アンド・テイクの精神は平社員時代から社長となった今までずっと意識しています。また、「お金の切れ目は縁の切れ目」とはよく言ったもので、私達社会人はお金の管理も徹底しなくてはならないと思います。

-That's basic manner for a member of society isn’t it

 

―つまり、社会人としての最低限度の心得ですね。

 Nonaka: I would think so. I said people who take an active part in society commonly practice the 5 S’s. But I think a successful businessperson has something else. What’s that? A successful person has some skills that help him or her to fight it out in business. Those may include a linguistic ability and leadership. I regard leadership as an ability to create an environment where a group can produce the best result.

 

野中　そうだと思います。さきほどは活躍している人に共通している素質は５Ｓを備えていることと表現しましたが、ビジネスで成功している人には別の要素が備わっていると思います。それは何かと言いますと、成功者には何らかのビジネスを戦い抜くスキルが備わっているということです。例えば語学力、さらにはリーダーシップなどです。私はリーダーシップとは、あるグループがいつでも最適の結果を産み出せる環境を創出することができる能力だと思います。

Much depends on luck

 

最終的には運次第

 

-So, what is needed is practical skills acquired through efforts and experiences, isn’t it?

 

―努力と経験で身に付けた実践的なスキルが必要ということですね。

 

Nonaka: Well, that is not all. You can’t do business unless you can speak out your ideas to others. You need to have a strong heart to do that properly. But, after all, I think much depends on your luck.

 

野中　それだけではありあません。自分の意見を堂々と発信することができなければ、ビジネスにはなりませんから、それをそつなくこなすために強いハートも必要です。しかし、最終的には何を言ってもその人の「運」次第ではないでしょうか。

 

  -Did you say luck?

 

―運、ですか。

 

Nonaka: Yes, I did. I suppose that chances of success are in place for everyone. I think a success or failure eventually hangs on your luck. I myself think that I could become a president because I was lucky. I think that a commonplace man like me was also gifted with a strong luck.

 

　野中　はい。成功のチャンスは誰にでも平等に用意されているなか、成功か失敗を分けるのは結局「運」に帰結すると思います。私自身、今の立場にいることも運だと思っています（笑い）。平凡な私にも強い運の力だけは備わっていたのだと思います。

 

-Can you give some messages to Chuo students?

 

―最後に現役学生に対してメッセージをお願いしします。

 

Nonaka: I say young people like you are really the national treasure. Even a commonplace man like me could assume the position to manage a company. While I was a student, I had never imagined that such a future was in store for me. You never know your future. There is no equation that will lead you to a success. So, keep your antenna ready to detect chances, do your best every day and brace yourself up for your dream.

　

野中　これからの日本を背負う、若い君たちはまさに国の宝です。平凡な私でも一企業を束ねる立場にまでなることができました。学生時代の私は、このような未来が待ち受けているなんて想像もしていませんでした。未来は未知数です。成功の方程式などというものなど存在しないのですから、チャンスに対してアンテナを張り、日々全力で過ごし、夢に向かって頑張ってください。
