Cognition of LGBTQ making headway

-Tell us specifically what your club mimosa does.

Suzuki: We hold our weekly regular meetings at lunch time. We talk about current news and prepare for movie events and meetings for exchange of opinions on gender problems. Last year, when the same-sex partnerships ordinances (that recognize same-sex couples as relationship corresponding to marriage and give part of rights as partners) were enforced in Tokyo’s Shibuya and Setagaya wards, we held a study meeting about the legislation. Some 15 people including those who are not Chuo University students got together at the meeting and deepened their understanding through an exchange of photos and magazines. The other day, we participated in the “TOKYO RAINBOW PRIDE” parade (held in Harajuku, Shibuya for the purpose of promoting people’s understanding of sexual diversity). I’d like mimosa members to deepen their understanding and work with a sense of ownership through participation in such familiar activities.

-Did you see any changes in this year’s parade as compared to the previous ones?

Suzuki: We noticed most prominent change in the attitude of people watching us on the roadside. When I first participated in the parade four years ago, no people at all threw their warm eyes at us. This year, however, more people seemed to acknowledge the term LGBTQ, in particular, and understand the purpose of the event. A taxi driver running in the opposite lane waved his hand at us. That was impressive. Also, I feel that an increasing number of companies now give their support to our activity.

-Can you tell us about your future aims?

Suzuki: I want to change society so that people don’t separate sexualities simply by words but respect each other that everyone has his or her own sexuality. I think it is a good thing for sexual minorities to be fairly recognized with the help of the term LGBTQ. However, I think we need to take one step further to deepen our mutual understanding that sexualities can’t be determined simply by words or general ideas. I think the border line separating sexualities is something very ambiguous as exemplified by some people who have a liking to things rather than human beings. I’d like to urge people to recognize sexualities are diverse, take seriously that separation of sexualities is the root cause of the issue and work to improve that situation.
