The Student English Newspapers Association (SENA) used to be known as a national organization encompassing the publishers of English campus papers in Japan. It had two chapters in the Kanto (eastern) and Kansai (western) regions. Each met regularly to talk about articles presented by the member schools and exchange opinions on problems related to their routine club activities. SENA published its own newsletter with the aim of assuming the role of a news agency. But the initiative didn’t last long for some reason or other. I remember the Waseda Guardian (of Waseda University) served as the SENA secretariat most of the time.

SENA also published its own magazine-format journal called SENA News once or twice a year. Its articles were mostly those contributed by its members. I think the journal played the role of sending messages of international solidarity to the rest of the world. Issues of SENA News were kept at Hakumon Herald’s club room at the Tama campus when I left school. It’s a pity no copies were available now. One of my colleagues at SENA kept most of the issues for himself. He was kind enough to give me three of them – the editions published in 1966, 1970 and 1971. I think they are valuable as they carry articles provided by Hakumon Herald.

According to the 1966 edition, 15 English campus papers were the full members of SENA.They were the ones published by Aoyama Gakuin University, Doshisha University, Hosei University, Konan University, Meiji University, Keio University, Rikkyo University, Kansai University, Kanagawa University, Chuo University, Kinki University, Kwansei Gakuin University, Nanzan University, Sophia University and Waseda University. Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, Japan Women’s University, Meiji Gakuin University and Ritsumeikan University became full members in 1970, followed by Otsuma Women’s University in 1971. 世界に情報を発信したSENAの活動

大学の英字新聞が集まった国内組織としてStudent English Newspapers Association (SENA)が知られています。関東と関西地区を中心に、それぞれ定 期的に会合を持ち、各大学の英字紙の記事を持ち寄ったり、クラブ活動についての情報を交換したりしていました。通信社機能を目指してニュースレターを 発行したこともありますが、定着するまでには至らなかった記憶があります。 事務局は早稲田大学に置かれることが多かったと思います。

この団体が年に1回か2回、加盟大学の記事などを掲載した冊子形式の英字 紙を発行していました。日本の学生英字新聞団体として、国際連帯を呼び掛けるメッセージを世界に発信する役割も担っていたと思います。中大白門ヘラル ドの部室には各号が保存されていたはずですが、いまは残っていません。当時 のSENA仲間が個人的に保存してくれていたお陰で「SENA NEWS」 (1966年)、「SENA’70」「SENA’71」の3部が見つかりました。中大から出稿した記事も入っていますので、ヘラルド関連の付属資料と して価値があると思います。

66年当時のメンバーは青山学院、同志社、法政、甲南、明治、慶応、立教、 関西、神奈川、中央、近畿、関西学院、南山、上智、早稲田の15校。70年になると京都外国語、日本女子、明治学院、立命館が加わり、さらに71年に は大妻女子の名前もあります。(昭和46年卒)
